Saving and closing

Saving documents, what parts and assemblies need before they save, unclosed cross-sections and tool profiles, and what happens when you close a tab or the app.

Every document in Atrium, from parts and assemblies to cross-sections and tool profiles, saves with one button or one key. This page collects the save requirements and what Atrium does when you close.

Save

Click the Save button or press Ctrl + S. While saving, the button's icon changes; when saving is done, it shows a green check mark.

Save requirements

Parts

  • A control point is required: A part with no control points can't be saved, and Atrium tells you why. See Assemblies and inputs.
  • Part position: When you save, the part is only moved so that its default control point (★) sits on the origin. It's never rotated.

New assemblies

A new assembly asks for its name and category right away and is saved. It can't be created without a category.

Unclosed sketches

A cross-section or tool profile whose shape is open (not closed) still saves, but until it's closed, it doesn't appear:

  • in the assembly library,
  • in the cross-section picker,
  • in the tool picker.

It also shows a warning icon in its own list.

Parts opened from an assembly

When you paste or drop a solid from Rhino or a STEP file into an assembly, a new part editor opens. The first time you save, the part goes back into that assembly. See Rhino and STEP files.

What's saved

Item Saved?
Dimensions Yes, with the document
Temporary hiding with the eye icon in the design tree No. It's for viewing only and isn't part of undo either.

Closing

If you close a tab or the whole app with unsaved changes, Atrium asks what to do:

  • Save
  • Don't save
  • Cancel (go back to your work)
